NATIVE AMERICAN
INDIAN BASKETRY Native American tribes, more than likely, first used basketry in an utilitarian fashion. Whether for the storage of grain or for use in gathering fruits and vegetables, a light and easy carrier was necessary. the other options included hides formed as bags and/or pottery. Using surrounding vegetation, especially in the southwest and on the west coast, basket weavers thrived. Additionally, some tribes use the baskets in ceremonies.
As was the case with most, basketry became a way for early Native Americans to generate wealth or create a trade. Today, American Indian basketry is created by numerous tribes for commercial sale. Amongst the most prolific and skilled are the Apache, Hopi, Navajo, and California tribes. please visit American Indian Basketry for more information.
